Craniosacral Therapy has been shown to improve quality of life in those suffering from depression and anxiety (Matarán-Peñarrocha et al 2011, Haller et al 2016.)
If you suffer from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, you may or may not be aware of the cause.
You may have tried many different therapies over the years and found that you are still in the same place. There can be many reasons for this but one of them is that talk therapies, whilst supportive, target the rational part of your brain, the prefrontal cortex, but mental emotional trauma is stored in a completely different part called the limbic system – the emotional part of your brain. And when it is stimulated it is not working with the reasoning part. It cannot be accessed through talking. But it can be accessed through CST.
Traumatic memories are stored as sensory fragments, a scent, a flash of an image, a sound. So if you have fled war where you heard bombings, the sound of a balloon bursting will stimulate your body to think it is in danger, initiating a fight, flight or freeze response and you may react as though you are back in the place you fled. To others it is an overreaction, but your body believes there is real danger present and is trying to keep you safe.
Some fears, may have unknown causes, such as a fear of an elevator or trapped spaces. It may be that you had a traumatic birth and were trapped in the birth canal for longer than you should have been. You cannot remember this but the memory is retained in the cells of your body.
You may have been through a divorce and find yourself struggling to process the loss of your family or feelings of abandonment.
Craniosacral therapy is a practice of truth. Your energy system cannot lie. It can’t say “I’m ok,” when you are not. Therefore it is an effective therapy for all types of personalities, whether you want to talk or not.
Wherever these traumas are held in your body, once the Craniosacral therapy starts, they will in time be released, and once they are, they open the door to true healing.
Often clients will feel energy moving through their chest and a rush of emotion and tears as they are put in touch with a memory still retained in their body. Sometimes they may not know why they are having the release. For others the release may occur in a more subtle way, or between sessions.
I hold a safe space for your system to express what it needs to.
Your body is in control and nothing is released that your system is not ready to address. But crucially the effects are long lasting and freeing.
